Take A Look: Parenting, Dating, Irrational

1 – Watch Your Conjunctions in Parenting – Have you ever told your child “I love you, but…” I do this constantly. Lots of great lessons to learn with this piece from The Gospel Coalition.

“I love you, but you need to obey.”

Every English-speaking parent has said that phrase at some point or another. It’s our attempt as parents to express commitment to our children even as we require them to obey: “I love you despite anything you do, but you also need to obey what I tell you.” I’d like to take issue, however, with using the conjunction but between these phrases. Using but may be communicating something we don’t want to say—namely, that there is some kind of conceptual opposition between “I love you” and “You need to obey.”

2 – You Probably Should Not Date Him If… – The healthiest marriages are the ones that continue dating after their married. Perry Noble gives some great insight into dating for singles that I think we can apply in our marriages.

Attention single ladies…dating is not a recreational sport, it’s a BIG DEAL and you are way more valuable than you could imagine.  There is no such thing as the perfect guy, but you should consider the following warning signs and probably should not date him if…

#1 – He Uses The Phrase, “The Ball Is Now In Your Court!”

3 – Irrational – Sometimes you just have to be irrational. I love this article about doing crazy things as a family.

This weekend was insane.

I had to be in Atlanta on Friday at 8:00 am for a meeting. Trish spent the day working on a chapter of our book. We met at 8:30 PM Friday night at Micah’s school, after I drove for 4 hours back from Atlanta. I moved my suitcase from my car to our van and we left for Indianapolis. We decided to drive 5 hours to Indy to spend 8 hours experiencing Superbowl XLVI and then drive 5 hours back to Nashville.
